Pearl: An X-traordinary Origin Story is a 2022 American psychological slasher film directed by Ti West, and co-written by him and Mia Goth. The film also starred the outstanding actress Mia Goth herself. Acting as a prequel to X (2022), Pearl had its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2022.
Returning to feature Mia Goth as the main character, she manages to deliver a thrilling and downright terrifying performance. Besides Goth (Pearl), this film also stars David Corenswet (Projectionist), Tandi Wright (Ruth), Matthew Sunderland (Pearl’s father), Emma Jenkins-Purro (Mitsy), and Alistair Sewell (Howard).
Pearl is considered to be a rare prequel, is judged to be highly effective, and acts flawlessly. Ti West is also a producer with Jacob Jaffke, Harrison Kreiss, and Kevin Turen. The film was produced under Bron Creative, Little Lamb, and A24, which also holds a US release on September 16, 2022.
According to the Box Office Mojo website, Pearl currently collects about 3.5 million USD domestic revenue and a production budget of 1 million USD. The number is still being accumulated until the movie stops from getting released.
The synopsis of the film follows Pearl, a girl trapped on her family’s isolated farm, she must take care of her ailing father under the tutelage of her obedient and bitter mother. Craving the glamorous life she sees in the movies, Pearl finds her ambition, temptation, and repression colliding in the place and story of her remarkable life.
Pearl received generally positive reviews, with critics praising Mia Goth’s performance and her homage to Hollywood’s golden age films, particularly The Wizard of Oz (1939). On the Rotten Tomatoes website, the film is certified “FRESH” like its predecessor. Another film in the franchise, a sequel to X titled MaXXXine, is in production.
